Update -> Discourse for Citizen Science on EC2

Just wanted to share a mini update on the Discourse installation we might be using for a Citizen Science course.

I’ve updated the installation to follow the details from the Production setup manual

  • Runs on EC2
  • SMTP email through Mandrill
  • Running the latest version of Discourse
  • I disabled twitter and facebook, but Google login seems to work out of the box now
  • Updating Discourse is supposed to be super easy (according to the setup manual), but I haven’t tried it.

It is not sure that we will use Discourse for a citizen science course (we are just discussing what such a project could look like). It took a few hours to get up and running, but was pretty painless.

It’s true, I totally signed up with Google without any problems.

How come you disabled the other social logins (I mean is there a hassle to manage them or you just didn’t want to support them?)

I disabled them, because they require configuration work. This site hasn’t really been launched / isn’t used and making more social login options available wasn’t a priority.
